Beginnings - A series of Firsts
I was alway a bit of gypsy in life, always trying this or that, always creative whether in the kitchen, or crafts. Since I am very earthy, stones, earth, fauna, nature, have always intrigued me and brought me great joy.
My first painting was an African woman carrying a jug on her head when I was 12. Prior to that cut-out dolls, pencil scribblings were the order of the day. Music and dance were an amazing expression of rythm as art, being in an all girls band for 5 years as soprano horn player from 10-15 years old.
Being a photographic model for teen years brought me in front of the camera through a variety of venues, the band, the Polish Youth Group and local beauty pagents.
Later, marriage and children provided a variety of artistic expressions with cooking, baking, cake making, pottery - specifically hand building, macrame, sewing, pressing flowers and making cards with them, tie dying, knitting, batik. This was a time that Vince got a good dose of freedom of expression through paper, crayons, pencils, rather than toys and television.
Like a gypsy, I never stayed with anything til I learned it then lost interest. The only passionate ongoing affair I had was photography, collector of cameras and their bits. After 40 years, 4 cameras later, it continues to inspire me. Even though, like my brother and son, I wanted to dive into painting, the fumes of paint created challenges, I continued with photography, expressing myself via many programs available for computer.
When I first got my computer program back 15 years ago, to my surprise, after over smudging a piece (a common newbie's blunder), I got really angry for doing so. I thought I had destroyed the piece, soon discovering the magic of mistakes. Alas, there are none, and my first digital piece was created. I "saw" a finished product and after patiently utilizing the strange buttons of the program - voila, my first digital "masterpiece" a self-portrait.
Then I discovered that many of my digital pieces would lend itself to watercolour. Being on my list, in 2004, I took my first watercolour class, loved it, with 2 others to follow. It is a challenging medium to be sure.
Photographing trees and nature were my first subjects and have thousands of photos of them and continue to add to my collection, hopefully one day have a coffee table book on their sensual side.
My first art show was in October 2006 in Vancouver, with my meditation group, 9 of us had a week to display/sell pieces. When I was asked if I would like to contribute, I busily matted 5 diverse pieces for display - first digital piece, Self Portrait/ print of first watercolour Birch Tree/ a photo-digital Goddess in Jericho Beach Park/ photo entitled Moss Kissing Fungus/ digital piece called When Two Become One. ***
